William Robert “Wilke” Romig, 71, of Dennison, Ohio, died Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Beacon Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Uhrichsville, Ohio, after a lengthy illness. Born May 9, 1939 in Uhrichsville, he was a son of the late Jesse Clifford Romig and Marie Agnes (Miller) Romig Maxwell.
A lifelong resident of the Twin City area, Wilke attended Dennison High School before serving his country in the U.S. Army Reserve for eight years. He was an auto mechanic by trade, and had also worked in the maintenance department for South Broadway Nursing Home. He enjoyed travel and camping, in his spare time, and was Methodist by faith. His greatest pleasure came from his love of country gospel music, especially the Monday night jam sessions he held in his garage.
On May 5, 1956, Wilke married the former Sonia Kay Maxwell who survives him. He is also survived by five children, Mary Jayne (Charles) Hoagland of Lexington, Ky., Thomas (Barbara) Romig of Sycamore, Ga., Peggy (Roger) Roup of Dennison, Robert Alan (Donna) Romig of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Ruth Marie Combs of Dennison; a brother, James Romig of New Philadelphia; two sisters-in-law, Virginia (Denny) Pozzi and Susan Maxwell of Dennison; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Richard Romig, and his stepfather, Raymond Maxwell, who raised him like his own child, in addition to his mother and father.
In keeping with Wilke’s wishes, he has been cremated without a public visitation or service. His family will receive callers in their homes at 312 N. 2nd St. and 323 Spring St., Dennison. Those wishing to honor Wilke’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Dennison Depot.
