William Homan “Sonny” Thompson, 77, of Massillon, Ohio, formerly a resident of Dennison, Ohio, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2013 at Aultman Compassionate Care Center in Jackson Twp. after a bravely fought battle with cancer. Born November 4, 1935 in Gnadenhutten, Ohio, he was a son of the late William Marshall and S. Carolyn (Homan) Thompson.
Sonny was a graduate of Dennison High School in the class of 1953. In 1956 and 1957, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. Throughout his long career in sales, Sonny worked for a number of area businesses including G. D. Haas Hardware, Alsco, Montgomery Ward, H.F. Auto Parts, Humphries Auto, Clark Ford and R & B Auto Parts. He was a member of the Dennison Eagles, Uhrichsville Moose, F. & A. M. Massillon Lodge and the Massillon Elks.
On March 19, 1958, he married the former Cora Irene Bowe with whom he celebrated fifty-five years of loving marriage this spring. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert E. (Helen) Thompson of Dover and Gary L. (Sandy) Thompson of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; a sister, Pamela Thompson Armstrong of Zanesville; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant brothers; his brother-in-law, William “Butch” Armstrong; and his grandparents, William and Della Thompson and Otto and Nellie Homan.
In keeping with Sonny’s wishes, he has been cremated without a public visitation or service. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the American Cancer Society, in lieu of flowers.
