Vernon D. Dunlap, 75, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away suddenly at his home on August 28, 2025 from an apparent heart attack. Born in Dennison, Ohio on June 22, 1950, he was a son of the late Richard Price Dunlap and Erma Blanche (McMullen) Dunlap. After graduating from Indian Valley North in 1969, Vernon went on to serve in the Army for nearly 40 years, achieving the rank of sergeant first class. During his time in the service, his proudest achievement was the ability to say that every one of his soldiers were brought home alive from each mission. His specific duties included serving as a combat engineer in VietNam from 1969 to 1971, at IRR from 1971 to 1973, with 477th MP Co. in Wooster, Ohio from 1973 to 1983, with 477th MP Co. in Columbus, Ohio from 1983 to 1986, serving in Cairo, Egypt in August of 1985, recruiting in Zanesville, Ohio from 1986 to 1988, with 344th MP Co. in New Haven, Connecticut from 1988 to 1994, with 344th MP Co. Locally, Vernon had worked for his family's business, Dunlap Electric, for a number of years and had also been employed by Tusco Manufacturing in Gnadenhutten for many years. In retirement, Vernon loved his final career as a licensed barber. On June 14, 1985, Vernon married Susan (Shaffer) Dunlap, with whom he shared over 40 years of marriage. Of all his traveling endeavors, he most enjoyed going on cruises with his beloved wife Susan, traveling the world with her by his side. Vernon was a longtime member of the William E. Donohue V.F.W. Post #7943 in Tuscarawas, Ohio, where he was a quartermaster for 11 years and had been active for many years in their respectful flag disposal program. Vernon enjoyed shooting, riding his motorcycle, and spending many evenings bowling at Cy Young Lanes in Newcomerstown.
