Verna Marie Smith

Verna Marie Smith, 85, of Dover, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center in Canton, after a brief illness. Born February 14, 1939 in Tuscarawas County’s Rush Twp., Ohio, she was a daughter of the late William and Dottie Bell (Moss) Sanders. Verna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker who had also enjoyed membership at the Uhrichsville Moose, Uhrichsville Eagles, and the former Dover V.F.W. Auxiliary.

On November 10, 1956, Verna married Charles Alvin Smith with whom she enjoyed nearly 17 years of marriage until his passing on August 10, 1973. They are survived by daughters, Dottie (fiancé, Larry Miller) Smith and Janice Short; sons, Chuck (Missy) Smith and Jeremy (companion, Bobbie Marie) Smith; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Verna is also survived by her siblings, Elwood, Fred, Darlene, Belinda, Goldie, Archie, Dever, Tom, Dottie Lou, Bob, and Bill, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, William and Wayne Smith; daughters, Marilyn and Anita Kay Smith; grandson, Curtis Taggart; and stepmother, Rachel Sanders.

Pastor John Stevenson will officiate a 1:00 p.m. funeral on Tuesday, June 18, at the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow in Greenmont Union Cemetery in Freeport. Verna’s family will receive callers at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, prior to her service.
