Stella G. Sliffe, 79, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 2, 2011 from Beacon Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Uhrichsville after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. A lifelong resident of the Uhrichsville area, she was born on her family’s farm near Blizzard Ridge on July 12, 1931, a daughter of the late William C. and Anna Gertrude (Curby) Guthrie. She was a graduate of Uhrichsville High School in the class of 1949.
On January 5, 1957, Stella married George Sliffe to whom she was a devoted and loving wife for over fifty-four years, caring for his every need and holding him in prayer when he was on the road in his job as a long-distance truck driver. George survives her at their home. She was also a wonderful mother to their two children, Pamela A. Dye and her husband, Terry C., of Carrollton and Allen D. Sliffe of the home. Stella loved caring for her family and was gifted in the domestic arts, enjoying sewing, knitting, crocheting, and cooking, especially her delicious homemade bread. She dearly loved her two grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel Dye of Carrollton, and treasured the time that she spent with them.
Stella is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Sarah “Sally” Fausto of New Philadelphia; a brother, Duane Guthrie and his wife, Linda, of Leesville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William E. Guthrie; four sisters, Eileen Archinal, Theda Arter, Madaline Guthrie, and Patsy Guthrie; and two nephews.
Stella was a faithful Christian who loved the Lord and was eager to share the Gospel with others. Currently a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia, she had previously been a member of Uhrichsville 1st United Methodist Church where she had been active in the life of her congregation as a Sunday School teacher and in the United Methodist Women.
Services for Stella, officiated by Rev. William Sowers, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 6, in the banquet hall of Jaycee Village in Uhrichsville. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
