Sonia Kay Romig, 74, of Dennison, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Affinity Hospital in Massillon after a lengthy illness. Born July 12, 1938 in Dennison, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Ruth Virginia (Giles) Maxwell.
Sonia was a lifelong resident of Dennison and a graduate of Dennison High School in the class of 1956. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, she was a nurses’ aide for several area nursing homes. She was Methodist by faith. Sonia’s happiest times were spent with her family, and she especially enjoyed traveling and camping. Her family will always remember their last camping trip with her over her birthday this past summer as a bright spot in the last years of her life.
On May 5, 1956, Sonia married William Robert “Wilke” Romig with whom she enjoyed fifty-five years of marriage until his passing on March 10, 2011. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jayne Hoagland, just nine days before her own passing. Her surviving family includes four children, Thomas (Barbara) Romig of Sycamore, Georgia, Peggy (Roger) Roup of Dennison, Robert Alan (Donna) Romig of Pinellas Park, Florida, and Ruth Marie Combs of Dennison; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia (Denny) Pozzi and Susan Maxwell of Dennison; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Jody (Doug) Ross and Julie (Todd) Thompson of Dennison with whom she was especially close.
In keeping with Sonia’s wishes, she has been cremated without a public visitation or service. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, P.O. Box 11, Dennison, OH 44621, in lieu of flowers. Sonia’s family wish to express their deep gratitude to Smith Ambulance and the Dennison Fire Department for all of their assistance throughout her illness which she truly appreciated.
