Shirley J. Mcconnell

May 28, 1935 — December 8, 2013

Shirley J. McConnell, 78, of Tippecanoe, passed away at her home on Sunday, December 8, 2013 after a lengthy illness. Born May 28, 1935 in Flushing, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Floyd J. and Wilma E. (Gribble) Waller.

Shirley was the loving wife of Richard L. McConnell with whom she was eagerly looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, having been wed on August 31, 1954. She is also survived by a daughter, Robin (Denny) Romshak of Freeport; two granddaughters, Candi (Anthony) Critser of Freeport and Shannon (Michael) Robinson of Westchester; great-grandchildren, Derek Robinson, Olivia Critser, Camryn Robinson, and Autumn Critser; sisters- and brother-in-law, Jane Waller of Louisiana, Sue McConnell of Uhrichsville, and Sara and George Basham of Tippecanoe; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jay Waller; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Larry McConnell, Fred and Ila McConnell, Wayne and Margery Norris, and Robert and Virginia Schultz.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished the time that she spent with her granddaughters and her great-grandchildren who were the light of her life. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a graduate of Uhrichsville High School in the class of 1954 and was a member of Tippecanoe United Methodist Church. She will be remembered by many for her wonderful cooking, as she spent thirty years as the cook at Camp Tippecanoe, as well as cooking for a number of years at the Raider Restaurant in Freeport and the former Freeport Bakery. In her spare time, she loved square dancing with her husband, visiting Amish country and bird watching.

Services for Shirley, officiated by Pastor David Koch, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow in Freeport’s Greenmont Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
