Schaffer Mercer

Schaffer Mercer, 83, formerly a longtime resident of Dennison, Ohio, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2011 while surrounded by his loving family at West View Manor in Wooster, Ohio after a brief illness. Born December 13, 1927 in Fairmont, W. Va., he was a son of the late Clell and Ruby Edna (Schaffer) Mercer.

On April 8, 1946, Schaffer married the former Dorothy May Melville with whom he enjoyed over sixty years of marriage until her passing on January 8, 2007. They are survived by three daughters, Vickie Lynn Ezzi and her companion, Tom Harlow, of Dennison, Mrs. Charles (Teresa Ann) Abbuhl of Shreve, and Mrs. John (Kimberly Sue) Kleski of Kansas City, Missouri; a son-in-law, Lloyd Rennicker of Dennison; ten grandchildren, Rick, Floyd, Kenny, Edward, Chastity, Stephanie, Candice, Schaffer, Bryan, and Justin; numerous great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Jo Mercer and Linda Lee Rennicker, and his sister, Barbara Stiles.

Schaffer was a retired clayworker, having worked at Superior Clay for many years. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, and had served as a seaman in the Merchant Marine of the U.S. Coast Guard, as well. In his spare time, he enjoyed putting together elaborate models and puzzles, playing darts, collecting maps, and rooting for his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also an avid animal lover.

Services for Schaffer,officiated by Pastor Eric Fairhurst, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 9, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside his beloved wife in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery with a military committal service. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday.
