Ruby A. Gartrell

Ruby A. Gartrell, 91, of Leesville, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Union Hospital in Dover. Born May 4, 1923 in Leesville, she was a daughter of the late John and Lila Marie (Easterday) Knight.

A lifelong resident of the area, Ruby was a 1941 graduate of Dellroy High School before studying at the Canton Actual Business School. She was a 25 year employee of the Scio Pottery, the former Orange Twp. Clerk (Fiscal Officer) and a member of the Carroll Temple #459 Sherrodsville Pythian Sisters for over 50 years. Ruby was a former member of Leesville United Methodist Church where she had been very active in her congregation, serving as a Communion Steward, the Financial Secretary and in various other church positions. She was currently a member of Uhrichsville First Presbyterian Church. Above all else, Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who loved to cook, bake (especially angel food cake which was her specialty), garden, and travel.

On June 1, 1945, Ruby married Edison T. Gartrell with whom she enjoyed 44 years of marriage until his passing on March 25, 1989. They are survived by a daughter, Gaila Gartrell of New Philadelphia; sons: Edison T. (Tanya) Gartrell and Jerry J. Gartrell of Bowerston, William Gartrell of Sherrodsville, and Timothy Gartrell of Bowerston; 7 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Ruby is also survived by a brother, Martin Owen Knight of Dover, as well as many extended family members including nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, John H. Knight; and five sisters: Ruth Culler (her twin), Priscilla Housel, and 3 infant sisters.

Services for Ruby, officiated by Rev. Mark Unrue, will be held at 11am on Wednesday, September 3, in Uhrichsville First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Leesville Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7pm on Tuesday in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Memorial donations may be made to the Uhrichsville First Presbyterian Church, P.O.
