Roy R. Steinbach, 88, of Wintersville, formerly of Gnadenhutten, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012. Born Aug. 19, 1924 near Port Washington, OH, he was a son of the late Lester R. and Fannie E. (Fellman) Steinbach.
A 1942 graduate of Port Washington High School, Roy spent most of his life in Gnadenhutten where he had helped build and was then employed by the former Alsco plant. Roy then spent more than 20 years as the rural mail carrier based at the Gnadenhutten Post Office. In 1943, Roy enlisted in the U.S. Army and went on to serve bravely in the 5th Infantry Division in the European Theatre during WWII. While serving, Roy received the Purple Heart medal for wounds incurred in action.
Roy had been a member of the Newcomerstown American Legion and the Newcomerstown Elks Lodge. An avid sports fan, Roy enjoyed following all Detroit sports teams, especially the Detroit Tigers. Roy liked spending time gardening, playing golf, bowling, playing cards, and playing billiards.
On March 20, 1947, Roy married the love of his life, Verna J. (Mishler) Steinbach. The couple recently celebrated 65 years of marriage, and Verna survives Roy at their home. Roy’s other surviving family include daughters, Candy and husband Michael Walters of Columbus, Renée and husband Geno Morelli of Wintersville, and Wendy and husband Carl Beckelheimer of Wintersville; grandchildren, Michael Walters, Ryan and wife Jenifer Becker, Erin Becker, Matthew and Marc Becker, Jessica and Emily Beckelheimer, and Morgan and Mitchell Morelli; and great grandson, Jack Becker.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by a son, Rex Steinbach, a daughter, Kim Becker, and a sister, Jeanette McMorrow.
Services for Roy, officiated by Pastor Gregg Kelly, will be conducted on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 1:00 pm in the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Internment will follow at Gnadenhutten’s Clay Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at visitation in the funeral home on Monday September 17, 2012 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and on Tuesday from 12:30 pm until 1: 00pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Roy’s memory with a memorial contribution are encouraged to do so to Charity Hospice of Wintersville, P.O. Box 2280, Wintersville, OH 43953.
