Roy D. Kennedy, 96, of Dennison passed away on February 26, 2015 at Trinity Hospital in Steubenville following a period of declining health. Born on November 14, 1918 in Gnadenhutten he was a son of the late Dennis Vinton and Margaret (Matthews) Kennedy.
Roy graduated from Gnadenhutten High School in 1936 and went on to serve his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was in the Infantry of the 8th Regiment which fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a life member of the Uhrichsville Elks #424,a member of Dennison Eagles #582, Uhrichsville Moose #740, the AIC, Tuscarawas VFW #7943, and the New Philadelphia VFW #1445. He was an outstanding golfer who held the record score at Big Bend for many years. He excelled at many sports and enjoyed competing in them all. He was a member of Park Christian Church in Dennison.
On December 24, 1938 Roy married the former June S. (Hostetler) with whom he shared 57 years of marriage until her passing in 1995. On November 30, 1996 Roy married L. Marlene (English) who survives him of their home. Roy’s other surviving family includes children, Allen R. Kennedy of New Philadelphia, Deb (Rick) Rose, Sheryl Maple, and Tim (Sheila) Maple; grandchildren, Jami (Shawn) Dakin, Amanda Maple, Allisha (Dr. Doug) Virostko, Tyson Maple, Shea (Rachel) Maple, Ryan (Ellie) Maple, and Dr. Michael (Mary Harris) Kennedy; great grandchildren Cate and William Kennedy; sister-in-law Gwen Kennedy; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents and his first wife, Roy was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Helen (Lamonica) Kennedy, a stepson, Randy Maple, and brothers, Paul, Earl, Bob, Ray, and Dennis, Jr.
Services for Roy, officiated by Pastor Scot Caley, will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday March 4 at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the charity of their choice.
