Ronald Eugene West, 59, of North Bay Rd. at Tappan, passed away suddenly at Trinity Hospital Twin City on Saturday, October 6, 2012. Born January 13, 1953 in Dover, he is a son of Kenneth E. West of Uhrichsville and the late Matilda A. “Tillie” (Dalpiaz) West.
After his graduation from Claymont High School in 1971 where he had won the Grand Award at the annual science fair every year while he was in junior high and high school, Ron studied Mechanical Engineering at Kent State University’s Tuscarawas Branch which prepared him for his over thirty year career in engineering during which time he contributed wholly or partially from conception through engineering in twenty-three patents for various materials and processes. He was most proud of the engineering collaborations he had with his son, Jason, while they worked together in their own company, Resource Engineering.
Ron was active in Grace United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville for many years. He and his future wife, the former Barbara J. Dallas, began their journey together while attending youth group at Grace United Methodist Church, and they were married there on January 1, 1972 by the Rev. Clyde Carter. In 1975, Ron built their home at Tappan Lake where he and Barb joyfully raised their two children, Kassey (Brian) Mathews of Port Washington and Jason West who preceded his father in death. Ron treasured the time that he spent there with his wife, children and grandchildren, Jasey Mathews and Kaleigh West who survive him and Joey West who, along with his father, was already in Heaven to greet Ron when he arrived. Over the years, he enjoyed countless happy times at the lake with his family and many friends.
In addition to his father, wife, daughter and granddaughters, Ron is survived by his brother, Steve (Dana) West of Tappan Lake; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Irma West, Maurice and Kelly Dallas, Dan and Gundel Dallas, Jo Ann and Dean Heid, and Molly Dallas; nieces and nephews, Cody, Kady, Luke, Leah, Bud, Mia, Matt, Molly Ann, Wanda, Heidi and Heather; and many dear aunts, uncles, cousins great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rick West, and father- and mother-in-law, Joe and Doris Ann Dallas, as well as his mother, son and grandson.
A memorial service and celebration of Ron’s life, officiated by Rev. Larry Malterer and Rev. Daniel Legg, will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, in Grace United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville. His family will receive callers at the church for three hours prior to the start of his service. He will be interred beside his beloved son in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Grace United Methodist Church. Always a kind and charitable man, Ron’s last act of selflessness was to become a tissue donor, so that in his passing he can help others to live better lives.
