Robert L. Allensworth, 82, of Gnadenhutten, O., passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Union Hospital in Dover, O. after a battle with cancer.

Born July 13, 1927 in Uhrichsville, O., he was a son of the late Clyde L. and Mary A. (Waud) Allensworth.

A resident of the area for most of his life, Bob was a graduate of Uhrichsville High School in the class of 1945 who then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy at the close of World War II. Upon his return home from the service, Robert completed training as a horologist (watchmaker) and purchased the former Grill’s Jewelry at 138 E. 3rd St. in Uhrichsville where he continued in business as Allensworth Jewelry until 1983. He then worked for the Boston firm, Gordon Brothers Jewelry, as a consultant for a number of years.

In his retirement, Bob purchased a thoroughbred race horse, Allejeba, who won several stakes races. Bob often referred to his years racing Allejeba as the best time in his life. Also in retirement, he had a hobby career working for the Watson Brothers’ Super Jems Carwash on Kaderly until his health prohibited him from continuing.

Bob was a member of Park Christian Church who had been an active member of his community in his younger years, serving on the Twin City Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Twin City Hospital. He was also a former member of the Uhrichsville Elks and the Clayland Lions.

Bob is survived by his wife, Betty Jane (Smith) Allensworth, to whom he was married on July 12, 1975, of the home; four children from his first marriage, James L. Allensworth of Georgia, Christine A. Crawford and her husband, Robert, of Dennison, Robert L. Allensworth and his wife, Rhonda, of Coshocton, and Gary L. Allensworth and his wife, Wendy, of Tuscarawas; and stepchildren, Darcy J. Reich and her husband, Dan, and Margo K. Foster and her husband, Matthew, all of Michigan.

Nine grandchildren, Rochelle Brindley and her husband, Ryan, Amber Allensworth, Tim Allensworth and his wife, Kelly, Kristi Brethauer and her husband, Ryan, Ariana Crawford, Dan Reich, Miles Foster, Jenna Allensworth and Bryce Allensworth, and five great grandchildren, Gavin, Taylor, Ava, Lucas and Cole, complete the family.

Bob is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy E. Williamson of Katy, Tx. and Vivian Maxwell and her husband, Gene, of Uhrichsville; a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia C. (Berarducci) Allensworth to whom he was married on July 28, 1948.

Services for Bob, officiated by Pastor Scot Caley, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in New Philadelphia.

Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and for an hour prior to the service on Saturday morning.

The family requests memorials be made to The Hospice House of Tuscarawas County. This facility is under construction and will provide comfort, care and support to patients and families in a homelike setting.
