Richard Glenn “Dick” Myers, 70, of Dennison, O., passed away at his home on Friday, June 25, 2010, following a lengthy illness.
Born May 5, 1940 in the Riverside area of Uhrichsville, O., he was a son of the late Jacob Francis Myers and Martha Isabella (Betts) Myers Reffett.
After graduating from high school in 1957, Dick was a career Navy man, having spent twenty-two years serving his country, including in Vietnam as a medic. He also served in the naval blockade of Cuba, as well as a dental assistant for thirteen years while stationed at the Connecticut Naval Base. During his service in the Navy, he was a graduate of the Navy Leadership program in 1966 and the Navy Financial Management School in 1967. He also worked as a worker in the nuclear power plant in Oswego, N.Y.
Upon retiring from the Navy, Dick worked as a painting contractor and for Homeco in Winesburg until his retirement. He was a member of the Dennison Eagles, the Uhrichsville Moose, Tuscarawas V.F.W., and Newcomerstown American Legion, as well as Grace United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville. He will be remembered as a giving man who enjoyed doing things for others whenever he could. Some of his happiest times were spent with his brother, Tyke. Dick especially enjoyed playing dice with friends, hunting, and wildlife.
Dick’s surviving family includes his wife, Andrea Leigh (Waggoner) Myers of the home, whom he married on November 29, 2008; two sons, Glenn Edward Myers and his wife, Denise, of Boston, Mass., and Aaron Richard Myers of Dennison; two grandchildren, Blake and Alexa; four brothers, Gary Lee Myers and his companion, Jane, of Springfield, O., Ronald Lynn Myers and his wife, Rose, of Uhrichsville, David A. “Tyke” Myers and his wife, Mary, of Uhrichsville, and Scott Bryan Reffett and his wife, Rose, of Springfield; two sisters, Sharon Hindman of Texas and Rosanne Dixon of New Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He will also be missed by his close friends, Ruth Combs, Dave Maple, and Peggy Roup; and his canine companion, KON.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin Myers, and Duane and Steve Reffett.
Services for Dick, officiated by Rev. Larry Malterer, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 30, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, O at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, the Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund, and the Amvets, in lieu of flowers.
