Richard "Dick" R. Maxwell

Richard R. “Dick” Maxwell, 90, of Dennison, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Riverside Manor in Newcomerstown following a period of declining health. Born December 17, 1920 at Dennison, he was a son of the late Albert and Claudia (Hilbert) Maxwell.

A life resident of Dennison, Dick graduated from Dennison HS in 1941. Dick was a life member of the Park Christian Church in Dennison where he had held the positions of Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. Following high school, Dick went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and continued to work for the Penn Central and eventually Conrail Railroad until his retirement in 1982. During WWII, Dick served his country proudly in the U.S. Army, working as a conductor and brakeman for both freight and passenger rail lines in Alaska.

Dick was an avid sports fan that was proud to have gone to the High School State Basketball tournaments for fifty consecutive years, and loved watching all of the Cleveland professional teams, Ohio State teams and Claymont teams. Dick was a member of the Retired Railroaders Association, the American Legion and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trapper.

On July 30, 1924, Dick married Alma M. (Colvin) Maxwell who preceded him in death on January 18, 2002. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Sherill and husband David Struchen of Dennison and Mrs. Rhonda and husband Michael Clark of Dennison; four grandchildren, Richard R and wife Heidy Struchen, Haelee and husband James Wallick, Darcy and husband Craig Melzer and Maggie Clark; seven great grandchildren, Kylar Struchen, Paige Struchen, Jarod Wallick, Jaden Wallick, Jana Wallick, Beaux Clark and Scarlett Clark; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Dick was preceded in death by a grandson, Casey Clark.

Family and friends are invited to visitation for Dick on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 from 6-8 pm at the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Services, officiated by Pastor Scot Caley, will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Internment will be in Uhrichsville’s Union cemetery beside his beloved wife. Those wishing to honor Dick’s memory with a memorial contribution are encouraged to do so to either Community Hospice of Tuscarawas Co. or Park Christian Church Building Fund.
