Ralph “Buddy” Long, Jr., 86, of Uhrichsville, O., was reunited with “his girl”, Jean, his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, on Monday, January 10, 2011 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison, O. after a period of declining health. Buddy married the former Norma Jean Watson on February 2, 1952 and missed her deeply every moment since her passing just four months ago on September 11, 2010.
Buddy and Jean are survived by a daughter, Debra Alpeter and her husband, Tom, of New Philadelphia; a son, Randy Long and his wife, Donna, of Uhrichsville; and a grandson, Adam Long of Uhrichsville. Buddy is also survived by a sister, Julia of Dennison.
A lifelong resident of the Twin City area, Buddy was born in Uhrichsville on April 3, 1924, a son of the late Ralph “Pop” Long, Sr. and Elizabeth(Waters) Long, Sr.
Following his graduation from Uhrichsville HS in 1942, Buddy joined the United States Navy and served his country proudly during WWII.
In 1992, Buddy retired from Superior Clay where he had worked for 46 years. An avid bowler, Buddy was a member of the Uhrichsville-Dennison Bowlers Hall of Fame. Buddy had been a member of the Uhrichsville Moose and attended the annual Moose State golf tournament for many years. Buddy also had been a past Worthy President of the Dennison Eagles. Buddy enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening, and was an accomplished handyman who loved working on and remodeling his home.
In addition to his parents and wife, Buddy was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Page and a brother, Herbert Long.
According to Buddy’s wishes, he has been cremated without a public visitation or service. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas Co., 201 W. Third St., Dover, OH 44622.
