Phyllis L. Gowins, 90, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away suddenly at Beacon Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Uhrichsville on Thursday, March 10, 2011. Born March 22, 1920 in Saxton, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Eurilla Viava (Kelly) Ross.
After graduating from Saxton H.S. in 1938, Phyllis furthered her education by attending a business college in New Jersey which helped her in her career as the office manager for Gowins Trucking which she operated with her husband, Glenn. In retirement, she and Glenn enjoyed wintering in Florida where they spent many happy days with their dear friends there. Phyllis delighted in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and treasured the time that she spent with them. She loved caring for her family, was a devoted wife and mother, and an accomplished seamstress.
On September 7, 1946, Phyllis married Glenn Edward Gowins with whom she enjoyed over sixty-four years of marriage until his passing, just a little over four months before her, on October 31, 2010. They are survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dale (Jenna) Stemple of Mansfield, Mrs. Jim (Sis) Swisher of Tifton, Ga., and Mrs. Mike (Alice) Moreland of Uhrichsville with whom she had resided; nine grandchildren, Curtis Stemple, Mrs. Bill (Traci) Hengst, Jimmy Martin, Jr. and his wife, Angie, Ryan Huff and his wife, Mari, Jamie Swisher and his wife, Irene, Brent Moreland and his wife, Stacy, Luke Moreland, Nathan Moreland and his wife, Nacole, and Heath Moreland; fourteen great grandchildren; three granddaughters-in-law, Marianne Stemple, Denise Stemple, and Jennifer Keaton; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. In addition to her parents and husband, Phyllis was preceded in death by a brother, Kelly Ross, and a grandson, Edward Stemple.
According to Phyllis’ wishes, she has been cremated without a public visitation or service. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Community Hospice, 201 W. 3rd St., Dover, OH 44622, in lieu of flowers.
