Phillip L. Markwell, Sr.

Phillip L. Markwell, Sr., 77, of Bowerston, passed away at Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia on Monday, January 13, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Born September 24, 1936 in Clearfield, Kentucky, he was a son of the late George Andy and Elizabeth (Link) Markwell. He was a resident of the Bowerston area since 1978 and worked in the local lumber and logging industry. An avid outdoorsman, Phillip loved hunting and fishing.

On November 5, 1955, Phillip married the former Violet D. Stanley who survives him at their home. He is also survived by their 5 children, Phillip L. Markwell, Jr. and Timothy R. Markwell of the home, James A. (Tammy) Markwell and Deloris J. “Dee” (Ray) Burleson of Bowerston, and Karen L. (Marty) Bloom of Dennison; Roger (Remah) Hodge of Barnhill and Mary Lehmiller of Bowerston whom he loved like his own children; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Joyce Markwell of Conneaut, Ohio; 3 brothers-in-law, Bud (Elaine) Stanley of Erie, Pa., Butch Stanley of Huntington, W. Va., and Sam Lelko of Ocala, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Markwell, and 3 sisters, Polly Kleckner, Betty Lelko and Violet Shuster.

In keeping with Phillip’s wishes, he has been cremated without a public visitation. A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Jerralyn Myers, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Tunnel Hill Cemetery near Bowerston at a later date. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the American Diabetes Association, Fresenius Medical Care and Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
