Mildred Maylea Mcbride

October 7, 1922 — April 28, 2017

Mildred Maylea McBride, 94, of Bowerston, left this earth on Friday, April 28, 2017, from Sunnyslope Nursing Home in Bowerston, after a period of declining health. Born October 7, 1922 in Bowerston, she was a daughter of the late Harry Scott and Mary McGary (Mowl) McBride.

Mildred grew up in Bowerston and was a 1939 graduate of Bowerston High School. She then earned a Bachelor’s degree from Baldwin Wallace University in 1944, followed by a Master’s degree from Columbia University in 1949. Mildred taught music for 47 years in Hawaii where she was active in Habitat for Humanity. She lived in Hawaii for 50 years, and had also resided in Scotland for a time, before returning to Bowerston. In addition to teaching, Mildred was a gifted author who drew from her extensive world travels for her books.

Mildred loved music, children and animals. She was a great cook and an avid gardener whose passion was caring for her cats and dogs. She was Methodist by faith and had been a member of Harris United Methodist Church in Honolulu, as well as the former Conotton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie McBride of the home; brothers, Bob McBride of Pittsburgh and Dwight (Sandy) McBride of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Mildred’s wishes, cremation is planned. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Wildlife Federation and Habitat for Humanity.
