Merlin Kennith "Carbite" Staten

March 20, 1933 — December 30, 2013

Merlin Kennith “Carbite” Staten, 80, of Uhrichsville, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2013 at Beacon Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Uhrichsville after a lengthy illness. Born March 20, 1933 in Dennison, he was a son of the late Otto Lee and Lois (Dugan) Staten.

Carbite worked as a roofer for over 35 years through the Canton/Akron Roofers Local #88 and was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Uhrichsville Moose and Uhrichsville Eagles who loved fishing and hunting in his spare time.

On August 13, 1974, he married the former Gloria J. Stull Drabic who survives him at their home. He is also survived by 5 children, Kennith (Ruth) Staten of Holloway, Marsha (Larry) Shisler of Akron, Kevin (Tracy) Staten of Uhrichsville, Margaret Staten of Uhrichsville and Allen (Theresa) Staten of Canton; 5 stepchildren, Richard (companion, Sandy) Drabic of Dennison, Carolyn (Paul) Smith of Martins Ferry, Michael Drabic of Florida, Virgil (Mary) Drabic of Arkansas and Shawn Lendon of Midvale; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Geneva Huff of Toledo; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 6 siblings, Charles, Lemoin “Jeep”, Vyrl, Bruce and Dorothy Staten, and Marcella Hillyer.

Services for Carbite, officiated by Pastor Tom Klaserner, will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will be held at a later date with a military committal service in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
