Mary Lou Lehigh, 81, of Stillwater, O., passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison, O., after a sudden illness.
Born in Uhrichsville, O. on February 19, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Grace Louise (Staley) McPeek.
Mary Lou was a lifelong resident of Tuscarawas County and a graduate of Tuscarawas High School in the class of 1946. She had devoted her life to her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and homemaker, and was Methodist by faith. Mary Lou was especially fond of the Cleveland Indians, and she supported her five boys from when they played farm team until they were through high school, washing uniforms for over twenty years, collectively.
On December 24, 1947, she married Robert Eugene Lehigh with whom she enjoyed nearly thirty-five years of marriage until his passing on June 2, 1982. They are survived by four sons, Michael Robin Lehigh and his wife, Marnee, of New Philadelphia, Frank Lehigh and his wife, Holly, of New Philadelphia, Shawn Lehigh and his wife, Sandy, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Todd Lehigh and his wife, Paula, of Stillwater; nine grandchildren, Christy O’Hagan, Keith Lehigh, Amber Hunker and her husband, Jay, Jason Lehigh and his wife, Kathryn, Christopher Sigler, Ott Lehigh, T.J. Lehigh, Lindsay Teague and her husband, Matthew, and Jeffery Kotajarvi and his wife, Ann; and twelve great grandchildren, Daren and Ryan O’Hagan, Jakob, Makenzie, Gabby, Jarrett and Sophie Hunker, Olivia, Charlie and Hilary Lehigh, and Jackson and Gus Kotajarvi, with three more great grandchildren expected.
Mary Lou is also survived by a brother, Ronald Dean McPeek and his wife, Ruth, of Tuscarawas and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Lou was preceded in death by a son, Herbert Lehigh; four brothers, Eugene, Herbert, Richard and Paul McPeek; and two sisters, Betty McPeek and Ruth Junkins.
Private family services, officiated by Father Martin J. Ralko, will be held in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow in Dover’s Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. A time of remembrance and celebration of Mary Lou’s life, including light refreshments, will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Dennison Masonic Lodge on Center Street.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Those wishing to honor Mary Lou’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the charity of their choice, in lieu of flowers.
