Mary E. Kavarnos Evans

March 26, 1940 — December 7, 2024

Mary E. Kavarnos Evans, 84, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, was carried by the angels into Heaven to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 7, 2024, surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born March 26, 1940 in New London, Connecticut, she was the only daughter of the late Evangelo Spiro Kavarnos and Lina (Bromley) Kavarnos. She was a 1958 graduate of New London High School.

A resident of Uhrichsville since 2023, Mary had previously resided in Tippecanoe, Ohio for 22 years after spending much of her adult life living in Canton, Ohio.  She was a member of Freeport Church of the Rock and had most recently attended Uhrichsville Church of the Nazarene. Mary was also a longtime member of the Uhrichsville Senior Center.

Mary was a beautiful, loving, graceful lady with a heart full of kindness.  She was a good listener and was loved by all who knew her.  She was an accomplished gardener and had beautiful flower gardens.  Mary was a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club in Freeport, Ohio where she was awarded Gardener of the Year. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker who had also enjoyed a fifteen-year career at the Stark County District Library - a job she truly loved as it dovetailed perfectly with her great love of books and reading.  Most of all, she cherished the time that she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Phillip E. Evans, and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage together.  After marrying on July 27, 1963, the couple spent their first year of marriage living in Puerto Rico where Phillip was stationed in the Navy.  She is also survived by her son, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Evans of Canton, and daughter, Mary Jo (Harold) Watson of New Philadelphia.  She was a wonderful grandmother to her four granddaughters, Miranda Evans, Erin (Stephen) Slone, Rachel Ralston, and Nicole Black.  Mary leaves behind two brothers, Spiro (Julie) Kavarnos, and Gerald (Claire) Kavarnos, all of Connecticut.  She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Patti (Ralph) Rood, Brenda Irby, and Bonnie Jo (Mick) Jefferson, all of Huntington, WV, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Jermaine Kavarnos, her in-laws, Milton and Odella (Fraley) Evans, and her brother-in-law, Russell Irby.

Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but they have the assurance that they will see her again in Heaven. They know Mary trusted Jesus as her Savior, and although their hearts are broken and they grieve, they “grieve not as others who have no hope”. I Thessalonians 4:13.

In keeping with Mary’s wishes, she will be cremated without a public visitation. Friends and loved ones are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of her life on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Uhrichsville Church of the Nazarene at 12:00 p.m. with an hour of visitation prior to the service.

The family would like to thank Ohio’s Hospice Foundation and Claymont Health and Rehabilitation for their wonderful care and help in the last few months of Mary’s life. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to do so by making a charitable contribution to Ohio’s Hospice Foundation, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
