Mary Helen Baker, 71, of Bowerston, O., passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Bowerston Pointe, following a lengthy illness.
Born July 14, 1938 in Harrison Co., Ohio, near Tappan Lake, she was a daughter of the late Arthur J. and Ethel I. (Patterson) Devaul.
A lifelong resident of the area, Mary Helen had lived in the Bowerston area since 1992, having previously lived in the Twin Cities for most of her life. She had resided at Bowerston Pointe for a little over a year, where she enjoyed loving and attentive care that was appreciated both by Mary Helen and her family.
Mary Helen was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed caring for her family and home, and she was skilled in the domestic arts, especially crocheting and canning. She also loved bowling and playing cards, and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians. She was a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church and a former member of Dennison Eagles Aux. #582.
A graduate of Dennison High School in the class of 1956, she worked at Twin City Hospital for many years. She had also worked at the Uhrichsville Dairy Queen and had been a bus driver for Claymont Public Schools for a short time.
On November 2, 1973, she married Hobert W. “Bert” Baker with whom she celebrated their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary last year. Her other surviving family includes a son, Robert W. Miles and his wife, Linda, of Dennison; three daughters, Rhonda E. Martinelli and her companion, Larry Beans, of Dover, Sheila R. Miles and her fiancé, Paul Donohoe, of Uhrichsville, and Sharon L. James and her husband, Todd, of New Philadelphia; a stepson, Paul L. Baker and his wife, Maureen, of New Philadelphia; six grandchildren, April Miles, TJ, Troy, Jerrod and Jennah James, and Victoria Miles; and two great grandchildren, Hannah Miles and Ryian Phillips.
She is also survived by three brothers, H. Jay Devaul and his wife, Judy, of Dennison, Gary L. Devaul and his wife, Paulette, of Dennison, and Arthur J. Devaul and his wife, Patti, of Dover; two sisters, Patty Palmer of North Carolina and Shirley Rhiel and her husband, Alfred, of Minerva; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary Helen was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Miles, and two granddaughters, Emily Martinelli and Melissa Miles.
Services for Mary Helen, officiated by Pastor Scott Simmons, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church near Dennison. Interment will follow in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery.
