Mary Elizabeth Clum, age 88, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at her home, following a period of declining health. She was born at Derwent, Ohio on March 15, 1923. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Clum; her parents, Arthur and Goldie Ethel (Dawson) Van Dyke; two brothers, Newt Van Dyke of Barnhill and Jim Van Dyke of Byesville; and a sister, Patty Lute of Midvale.
In the late 1930’s Mary met Chester Clum. Then, on November 16, 1940, they were married and enjoyed 67 years of marriage together until he passed away in 2007.
Mary enjoyed many hobbies during her lifetime, including sewing, reading, and embroidering pillow cases. Her favorite times were spent with her best friend, Betty Jewel, when they were flea marketing. They spent nearly 30 years in their adventure and could be spotted in many different flea markets throughout the area. Their best accomplishment, they would say, was helping Vic and Winnie to start the Garver Flea Market in Strasburg, which they enjoyed tremendously, and where they met many lifetime friends. Mary was a delightful person to be around, and she never met a stranger.
Mary also enjoyed her spiritual life as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She enjoyed her fellowship with her spiritual brothers and sisters and looked forward to the New System which is soon to be upon us.
Mary leaves behind a family that includes a son, Jerry Clum and his wife, Carol, of New Philadelphia; daughters, Janet Clum of New Philadelphia and Barbara Redinger and her husband, Kevin, of Dublin, O.; eight grandchildren, Doug Clum and his fiancée, Terri, of Dover, Greg Clum of New Philadelphia, Shelly Farrar and her husband, Mike, of Atlanta, Ga., Mitchell Clum and his wife, Cindy, of Marietta, Kelly Creager of New Philadelphia, Dane Redinger and his wife, Katie, of Dublin, O., and Mika and Mack Redinger of Dublin, O.; great-grandchildren, Carissa Gay and her husband, Ryan, Tynan Clum, Michael and Christian Farrar, Aaron Vermule, Steve and Taylor Clum, Zak Blake and his wife, Michaela, James Blake, Andrew Creager, and Jacob Redinger; and great-great-grandchildren, Ryan Gay Jr., Max, Zak Jr. and Arianna Blake, and Kaylynn and Madison Creager. Many nieces and nephews complete the family.
At Mary’s request, cremation has taken place without calling hours. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Evergreen Cemetery in New Philadelphia.
