Mary Elizabeth Armstrong, 90, of Gnadenhutten, O., was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 13, 2008 from Hennis Care Center in Bolivar, O.
Born May 19, 1918 in Uhrichsville, O., she was a daughter of the late George Ancil and Leafy Viola (Johnson) Orr. The last of her family’s generation, Mary was preceded in death by six brothers, Bill, Harry, Bud, Bob, Jim and Ancil “Jr.”; and five sisters, Zelma, Grace, Nellie, Ada and Eileen. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Faye, of Uhrichsville and a brother-in-law, Steve, of Canton.
On April 18, 1936, she married Taylor M. Armstrong, Sr. with whom she enjoyed over forty years of marriage until his passing on April 8, 1977. They are survived by three daughters, Mrs. Gail (Faye) Phillips of Gnadenhutten, Mrs. James (Thelma) Vermillion of Tippecanoe and Mrs. Carlton (Doris Ann) Flora of Newport News, Va.; three sons, Gary Lee Armstrong and his wife, Nancy of Gnadenhutten, William E. Armstrong and his wife, Pamela, of Zanesville, and George Edward Armstrong and his wife, Cindy, of Uhrichsville; twenty-six grandchildren; seventy-two great grandchildren; and fourteen great great grandchildren. Mary was also preceded in death by two sons, James A. Armstrong and Taylor M. Armstrong, Jr.
Mary was a devoted and loving, wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who truly loved caring for her family. She took great pleasure in keeping her home spotless, and enjoyed canning the vegetables her husband grew in their garden. She also cleaned house for a number of other families in the area over the years.
Services for Mary, officiated by her grandson, Pastor Rod Phillips, will be held on Monday, November 17, at 2:00 p.m. in the Dennison Foursquare Gospel Church where she had been a member. Interment will follow beside her beloved husband in Freeport’s Greenmont Union Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Dennison Foursquare Church from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Dennison Foursquare Church.
