Marietta L. Holland

May 3, 1927 — September 1, 2016

Marietta Laverne Holland, 89, of Newcomerstown, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at her daughter’s home near Uhrichsville. Born May 3, 1927 in Youngstown, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Emma (Miller) Spears.

Marietta devoted her life to her family as the loving wife of the Rev. Edward Lyman Holland who preceded her in death in 2009, and mother of their six children, Carlene (James) Brown, Andrea (Robert “Michael”) Hurray, Douglas Holland, Bonnie Holland, Everett (Betty) Holland and Gwendolyn (Michael) Wright who survived them. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Byron, Melody, Terri, Sandi, Stephanie, Wendi, Paul, Justina, Jeremy, Chad, Benjamin, and BreAnn; 13 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Gertrude Berendt, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Charlotte Dunlap and Hazel Mae Spears.

An area resident since 1992, Marietta had lived in Gnadenhutten, Uhrichsville and Sherrodsville. Previously, she had lived in Indiana while serving in ministry with her husband. She loved caring for her family and home, and also loved her dogs very much. She and her husband joyfully served the children of their community by being foster grandparents within Claymont Public Schools. She was a longtime member of the Assembly of God.

A memorial service and celebration of Marietta’s life, officiated by Pastor Milo Baker, will be held at 5pm on Saturday, September 10, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 4pm to 5pm, prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
