Margaret H. “Peg” Mallernee, 86, of Dennison, O., peacefully left this life on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 while surrounded by her loving family in Aultman Hospital at Canton, O., following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of the Twin City area, Peg was born in Uhrichsville on November 16, 1921, the daughter of the late Gilbert Burgess and Anna (Myers) Hunt. She was a graduate of Uhrichsville High School in the class of 1939 and was instrumental in keeping her classmates in touch over the years, working year round to organize their class reunions. She was very much looking forward to their seventieth reunion which would have been in 2009. After her graduation from high school, she studied at the Canton Actual Business College which prepared her for her work with the U.S. Employment Service as a stenographer and with the War Manpower Commission. She was also a volunteer at the Dennison Canteen during World War II.
On November 16, 1942, Peg married Donald E. Mallernee with whom she enjoyed nearly six decades of marriage until his passing on August 9, 2000. From 1972 until 1987, she and her husband worked together, owning and operating Mallernee’s Foodstore in Uhrichsville.
In addition to her work outside the home, Peg was a devoted and loving wife, mother and homemaker, including serving as a Girl Scout Leader for ten years and as a neighborhood chairman for eight years. She was especially proud to be the matriarch of five generations and loved being with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was Methodist by faith.
Peg and Don are survived by a son, Michael Paul Mallernee and his wife, Karen, of Columbus, O.; a daughter, Mrs. Randy (Nanette) Lindsay of Uhrichsville; grandchildren, Michael Paul Mallernee, Jr. and his wife, Vivian of Garden Grove, Ca. and Mrs. Kyle (Dawn Marie) Williams of Uhrichsville; four great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; her beloved canine companion, Molly; and a host of dear neighbors and friends.
According to Peg’s wishes, she will be cremated without a public visitation or service. A private family graveside service will be held when she is interred beside her husband in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the charity of their choice.
