L. Pearl Mccreery

April 6, 1919 — January 11, 2011

Luella P. “Pearl” McCreery, 91, of Dover, O., formerly a longtime resident of Gnadenhutten, O., passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Union Hospital in Dover after a short illness. Born April 6, 1919 in Uhrichsville, O., she was a daughter of the late William Arthur and Gertrude Sarah (Millwood) Hodkinson.

On January 5, 1938, Pearl married James Marvin McCreery with whom she was blessed to spend sixty-four years of loving marriage until his passing on May 27, 2002. They are survived by a son, James Marvin McCreery, Jr. and his wife, Ruthann, of Westerville; two daughters, Mrs. Pat (Janet) Brady with whom she had resided for the past five years and Christina L. McCreery of Dover; six grandchildren, Leslee Seemann of North Canton, Sheri Bates of Mansfield, Mrs. Mike (Gena) Grasselli of Dover, Courtney McCreery of Westerville, James Marvin McCreery III and his wife, Stacey, of Westerville; and Kelly Smith of Canton; eight great grandchildren, Mason and Isabella Grasselli of Dover, Carson Denning and Jarid Seeman of North Canton, Ashley Nicole Benadum of Canton, A.J. Burroway of Dennison, and James Marvin McCreery IV, and Morgan Olivia McCreery of Westerville; a great great granddaughter, Arihanna Lilly of Canton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, as the last child of her generation, Pearl was preceded in death by six brothers, Everett, Arthur, Walter, Dick, Ray, and Harry Hodkinson; and two sisters, Gertrude Bradley and Lucy Sutton. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Pat Brady.

Pearl delighted in the time that she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren who lovingly called her “G.G.P.”. She was their babysitter on many occasions and loved rocking and cuddling them when they were little and spending many hours in conversation with them as they grew up. In her younger years, she was a member of the Twin City Women’s Bowling League, as well as a local Ladies’ Golf League in Uhrichsville. Over the past four years, she got much joy from the companionship of Josie, her dear pet dog whom she shared with her daughter, enjoying their mornings together each day. She was a longtime member of Gnadenhutten United Methodist Church.

Services for Pearl, officiated by Rev. Harry Milligan, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 14, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. She will be interred beside her beloved husband in Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery at a later time. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Those wishing to honor Pearl’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the American Diabetes Association.
