Kenneth “Lee” Hunter, 89, of New Philadelphia, O. passed away while surrounded by his family at Union Hospital in Dover, O. on Thursday, August 12, 2010, following a lengthy illness.
Born February 16, 1921 in Uhrichsville, O., he was a son of the late Everett G. and Marie L. (Clark) Hunter.
Lee was a 1939 graduate of Dennison High School. He went on to serve his country in the United States Army as a small arms mechanic during World War II. While serving in the European Theatre, he received a Bronze Star medal, an American Theater ribbon, Good Conduct medal and a WWII Victory medal. Upon returning home from the service, Lee worked for both Quimby’s and Nickels Bakery as a bread deliverer until his retirement. Lee was a member of the Midvale United Methodist Church, and a former member of Tuscarawas V.F.W., and the Uhrichsville Moose. Lee was an avid golfer, having made two holes-in-one, and he also enjoyed gardening and dancing.
On December 30, 1946, Lee married Vera M. (Johnson) Hunter who preceded him in death on May 18, 2005.
Lee’s surviving family includes daughter, Karen and husband Joseph Tripodi of New Philadelphia, son, Nicholas C. and wife Maggie Hunter of Lancaster, OH, daughter Anna Lee and husband Michael Torch of Dennison, daughter Jan L. and husband John Ackley of Washington Courthouse, and daughter Kimberly H. and husband Ronald Bigler of Webster, FL; thirteen grandchildren, Danielle, Julie, Trevor, Darin, Nicholas, II, Topaz, Robbie, Kenneth, Brandi, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Jared and Debbie; five step grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Lee was preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Carl W. Hunter; sister, Mary Lou Santrock; one granddaughter; and one great grandson.
In keeping with his wishes, Lee will be cremated with no services or viewing to be held.
Those wishing to honor Lee’s memory with a memorial contribution are encouraged to do so to the Midvale United Methodist Church, Community Hospice (formerly Hospice of Tuscarawas Co.), 201 W. Third St., Dover, OH 44622, or Union Hospital.
