John Robert “Bob” Baker, 87, of Gnadenhutten, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Community Hospice in New Philadelphia, after a short illness. Born March 20, 1929 in Uhrichsville, he was a son of the late Donald Cummings and Helen Elizabeth (Boyer) Baker.
Bob was a 1948 graduate of Bowerston High School before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army in the 50s, attaining the rank of Corporal. With the exception of his years in the Army, he was a lifelong resident of the area who had a 38 year career as a machinist at the Gradall Company.
On July 16, 1955 in the John Heckewelder Memorial Moravian Church in Gnadenhutten, he married the former Mary Alice Schupp with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage last summer. He is also survived by their four children, Robert (Vickie) Baker, David (Kim) Baker, Carol (Mark) Murphy, and John (Valerie) Baker; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Bob’s brothers, James (Janice) Baker and Donald Baker, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews complete the family.
According to Bob’s wishes, he will be cremated without a public visitation. A private family graveside service, officiated by Pastor Paul Giffin, will be held in Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery in Gnadenhutten with a military committal service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice.
