John Wilbert “Jack” Hunter, 82, a lifelong resident of Dennison, O., passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Union Hospital in Dover, O., after a period of declining health.
Born May 5, 1928 in Dennison, he was a son of the late Wilbur Gatchell and Florence Evelyn (Hillyer) Hunter.
Jack was a graduate of Dennison High School in the class of 1946. He went on to serve his country in the United States Army as an M.P. during the Korean War. Upon returning home from the service, Jack worked in the local clay and railroad industries before working as a forklift operator at Associated Grocers for thirty years until his retirement. He was a member of Teamsters Local #92.
On June 26, 1959, Jack married the former Joyce Ann Greenwalt with whom he enjoyed nearly thirty-four years of marriage until her passing on May 29, 1993. They are survived by a son, John W. Hunter of Canton; two daughters, Wendy Hogue and her husband, Phillip, of Gnadenhutten and Mindy Markwell of the home; five grandchildren, Kayla Cugliari and her husband, Tony, of New Philadelphia, Aerial Markwell of the home, John Hayes of Dennison, Allyssa Hogue of Gnadenhutten, and Kelly Smith of Canton; and two great grandchildren, Ashley Benedum of Canton and A.J. Burroway of Tuscarawas.
In addition to his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Loren “Butch” Hayes, Jr.
In keeping with Jack’s wishes, he has been cremated without a public visitation. A graveside service, officiated by Rev. Jim McConnell, will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 1, 2010 in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery where John will be interred with his beloved wife. A military committal service will be conducted by the V.F.W. during the service.
