Jerry E. Knight, 75, of Bowerston, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2016, at Aultman Hospital in Canton. Born September 1, 1940 in Barnesville, Ohio, he was the son of Elizabeth M. (Buckio) Knight and the late Charles Edward Knight.
Jerry joined the U.S. Navy prior to his graduation from Uhrichsville High School in 1958. He proudly served his country for 23 years until his retirement as a Chief Petty Officer in 1981. He often said he was a veteran of Barcelona, Spain and had been everywhere the grass was green, and the good places twice. In retirement, he earned his Associates Degree from Kent State University’s Tuscarawas Branch and enjoyed many different occupations, especially woodworking. Above all else, he loved spending time with his dogs and his family. He was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and was known as Papa Jerry to many of them.
On January 14, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Lou Sharrock, who survives him. Along with his wife and mother, he is survived by children, Kathleen (Jim) Watson, Jerry E. Knight II, and Mistina (David) Tolarchyk; grandchildren, John Knight, Jessica McCullough, Heath and Desiree Watson, Sophia and Sammy Knight, and Tyler and Tanner Tolarchyk; great-grandchildren, Kohl, Kenadie and Klark Watson, Isaiah, Lilyona and Zoe Hardy, and Dominic and Leland McCullough; and an aunt, Norma Jean Ward. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, John C. Knight.
Services, officiated by Pastor Scott Simmons, will be held at 11am on Wednesday, March 30, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow with a military committal service in Bowerston’s Longview Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
