James Robert Overholt, 84, of Dennison, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 8, 2011 from Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio after a lengthy illness. Born September 7, 1926 in Fresno, Ohio, he was a son of the late Harold Parker and Odessa (Law) Overholt.
A resident of Dennison for the past sixty years, Jim had previously lived in Coshocton. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and was active for many years in the Veterans of Foreign Wars as a member of Tuscarawas V.F.W. Post #7943 where he served on their military committal squad and in many other capacities within the post, as long as his health permitted him. He had served as a past council commander and past district commander, as well.
Jim retired from Central Wisconsin where he had been a driver, in addition to driving trucks for several other area companies. He enjoyed working as a plasterer for a time, too. Jim loved hunting and fishing, and spent many happy times camping with his family. In recent years, he has delighted in spending time with the youngest members of his family as he faithfully attended his great granddaughter’s ballgames. Jim was a longtime member of the Uhrichsville Elks Lodge #424 where he served in a variety of leadership capacities over the years and was a regular volunteer for the lodge’s annual horse show. He was a member of the Christian Temple in Uhrichsville.
He is survived by his second wife of twenty-four years, Gloria; three children, Judy (Rick) Lutz, Rev. Janie (Rev. Larry) Hostetler, and John (Dana) Overholt, all of New Philadelphia; five grandchildren, Jamison (Melissa) Hostetler, Juli Hostetler, Trey Overholt, Denise (Frittz) McGinnis, and Kevin DeMattio; five great grandchildren, Morgan, Aleah, and Miley Hostetler and Austin and Bailey McGinnis; a brother, Francis (Helen) Overholt of West Lafayette; a sister-in-law, Doris Overholt of Newcomerstown; and several nieces and nephews. Jim will also be greatly missed by his four-legged best friend, Prince, his dog. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Overholt, and a brother, Clifford Overholt.
According to Jim’s wishes, he has been cremated. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, at the Christian Temple in Uhrichsville where family and friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery with a military committal service officiated by Tuscarawas V.F.W. Post #7943. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Jim’s memory may do so by a donation to the Christian Temple, 4249 Belden Drive S.E., Uhrichsville, OH 44683.
