James D. Moreland

December 1, 1933 — September 2, 2012

James D. Moreland, 78, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 2, 2012 after struggling with diabetes and its complications for many years. Born December 1, 1933 in Dover, Ohio, he was a son of the late Rev. Vaughan and Margaret Pauline (Powell) Moreland.

While still a teenager, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country as a tail gunner during the Korean War, earning a number of decorations. He enjoyed getting together with his fellow Korean War veterans on a regular basis for the rest of his life. He was a businessman who owned and operated his own construction company for thirty years before owning a Western wear company in his later years. Jim loved to travel and enjoyed exploring the United States, as well as other places further abroad. He was a member of A.A.R.P. and an avid Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Indians fan. He was Nazarene by faith.

Jim is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughters, Radonna Moreland of Uhrichsville and Lorie (Timothy) Myers of Uhrichsville with whom he had resided; grandchildren, Nicole (Bill) DeLong of Dennison, Kasie (Timothy) Cameron of Uhrichsville, and Mikala and Cole Myers of New Philadelphia; great grandchildren, Abygail and Bryce Cameron and Kaylee DeLong; sister, Betty Whitman of Arizona; brothers, Vern Moreland of Arizona and Dan (Susan) Moreland of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former spouse, Wanda Marie Layfield.

Family and friends are invited to call at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5. A gathering in celebration of Jim’s life will immediately follow at Dennison Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #582. A private, family graveside service will be held at a later date in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Those wishing to honor Jim’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the American Diabetes Association.
