James E. Leslie, Sr.

January 17, 1938 — February 3, 2022

James Edward Leslie, Sr., 84, of New Philadelphia, passed away at his home near Tuscarawas on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Born January 17, 1938 in Martins Ferry, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Louis and Gertrude Bell (Lewis) Leslie.

A longtime Tuscarawas County resident, James was proud to be a clay worker for 50 years, finishing his career with Superior Clay in Uhrichsville where he was employed from 1977 until his retirement in 2003. He attended the Nazarene Church.

On January 5, 1957, James married the former Virginia Jean Huffman with whom he celebrated 65 years of loving marriage last month. He is also survived by their children, Jim (Dana) Leslie, Roger (Peggy) Leslie, Loretta (Mark) Johnson, and Stephanie (Gary) Byrd; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson; brothers, Howard Leslie, Francis “Joe” Leslie, and Richard Leslie; sister, Edith Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Leslie Murphy, and three brothers, Charles, Robert, and Harold Leslie.

A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Alvin Conkey, will be held at noon on Wednesday, February 9, at R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. He will be interred in Rush Church Cemetery near Uhrichsville on a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, OH  44663.
