James J. "Jim" Bernard

February 15, 1924 — January 24, 2010

James J. “Jim” Bernard, 85, of Uhrichsville, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2010. Born February 15, 1924, he was the eldest son of the late Charles Henry and Clara Rosena (Rothley) Bernard.

A 1942 graduate of Freeport High School, Jim spent his younger years in Freeport, moving next to Tuscarawas, and finally in 1961 to Uhrichsville. Jim and his late wife Eileen owned and operated Bernard’s Grocery Store in Uhrichsville for many years. In 1989, Jim retired from Alsco Aluminum where he had worked as a painter. Jim was a member of the Park Christian Church in Dennison, AARP, the Uhrichsville Moose Lodge #740, and a life member of the Uhrichsville Eagles.

On September 01, 1945, Jim married N. Eileen (Malterer) Bernard who preceded him in death on June 22, 1993 after over 47 years of marriage.

Jim is survived by his son Jeff (Cathy) Bernard of Bridgeport; granddaughter Carrie (Tim) Dobbs of Oak Island, NC; grandson Jeff (Jamie) Bernard, Jr. of Steubenville, OH; five great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Jane (John) Demuth of Gnadenhutten and Barbara Bernard of New Philadelphia; brother-in-law Karl Gerwels of Minster, OH; and several nephews, great nephews, and great nieces.

In addition to his wife and parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Bernard, his sister, Marge (Bernard) Gerwels, and his longtime companion Helen Garrett.

Funeral services for Jim, officiated by Pastor Stephen Cox, will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 in the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennnison. Internment will follow in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home for visitation from 5 pm until 8 pm on Tuesday, January 26, 2010.
