Jacqueline L. Smith

June 23, 1943 — May 8, 2026

Uhrichsville, Ohio

Jacqueline Lee “Jackie” Smith, 82, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, following a period of declining health. Born June 23, 1943 in Dennison, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late William Edward and Pauline (née Ross) Cavanaugh.

Jackie was a 1961 graduate of Dennison High School who had made the Twin City area her home throughout her life. While she was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, many in the area will remember her from the years when she had worked for local doctors’ and dentists’ offices. She had also been employed by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s office as a deputy for a number of years. Jackie’s great passion for the youth of our community was on full display in her work with the D.A.R.E. program which she had instituted in the 80s and continued to support for decades. She was also instrumental in the founding of Tuscarawas County’s recycling program – leaving a legacy to benefit future generations.

She somehow found time in her busy schedule to be an accomplished writer who was a contributing author to a local history book. Jackie was active at Strait Gate Baptist Church in Dennison, as well, until her health prevented her.

On November 1, 1993, Jackie married Fred L. Smith with whom she enjoyed nearly 28 years of marriage until his passing on February 1, 2021. She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Cannon, Julie Erickson, and Kelli Giumenti; stepson, Frederick (Rhonda) Smith; grandchildren, Ty, Chase, Austin, Andrew, Steven, Cole, Emma, and Landon; great-grandson, Cooper; sisters, Sandy Golec and Bonnie Jean (Bob) Sparkman; brother, William E. (Betty) Cavanaugh, Jr.; aunts, Judy Williams and Shirley Ross; uncle, Richard Huston; and a large extended family of dear nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Frank Golec.

In keeping with Jackie’s wishes, cremation is planned without a public visitation. Her family will celebrate her life privately. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Strait Gate Baptist Church and Starlight Enterprises, in lieu of flowers.
