Jack H. Best

August 2, 1928 — July 3, 2014

Jack Harrison Best, 85, of Dennison, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia. Born August 2, 1928 in Bowerston, he was a son of the late James and Mary (Riley) Best.

Jack proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman from 1949 to 1953 during the Korean War, before beginning his lifelong career in trucking. He was an avid deer hunter who treasured the times that he spent hunting with his nephews and great-nephews. He was also an ardent supporter of Claymont Mustangs Football who stood at the top of the stands every game, where he proudly watched his nephews tip their helmets to him as they entered the locker room. He will be remembered by many as “the bubble-gum man” as he loved passing out gum to everyone he met.

On May 18, 1956, Jack married the former Betty Garrett with whom he enjoyed nearly 43 years of marriage until her passing on July 9, 1999. They are survived by two daughters, Jackie and Betty Best of the home; a granddaughter, Courtney Best of the home; and many extended family members including nieces, nephews and in-laws. He will also be missed by his faithful canine companion, Cammie. The last of his generation, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 3 sisters, in addition to his parents and wife.

Services for Jack, officiated by Pastor Minnie Garabrandt, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside his beloved wife in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery with a military committal service. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Those wishing to honor Jack’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Community Hospice.
