Hobert Welton Baker, 91, of Tuscarawas, formerly of Bowerston, passed away at his daughter’s home in New Philadelphia on Monday, February 22, 2021, after a brief illness. Born January 18, 1930 in Belmont County near Saint Clairsville, Ohio, he was the only child of the late Roy C. and Revelle (Johnston) Baker.
Bert was a 1948 graduate of Bowerston High School before his long career as a foreman in road construction, having been employed by Edgar Spring, Inc. for 42 years and Kokosing Construction for 3 years. He was a life member of Elks Lodge #424 in Uhrichsville and was a member of Dennison Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #582 for over 30 years where he was the Secretary for a number of years. He was also a member of Tuscarawas County Cy Young Old Timers’ Baseball Hall of Fame. He attended Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church.
On November 2, 1973, Bert married Mary Helen (Devaul) Miles Baker with whom he enjoyed nearly 36 years of marriage until her passing on September 3, 2009. They are survived by sons, Paul (Maureen) Baker and Robert (Linda) Miles; daughters, Rhonda (Larry) Beans, Sheila (Paul) Donohoe, and Sharon (Todd) James; grandchildren, Michelle Heter, Natalie Baker, Heather Dayton, Kyle Armstrong, April Miles, T.J. James, Troy James, Jerrod James, Jenna James, and Victoria Miles; and many great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Victoria Ann Baker; son, Thomas Miles; granddaughters, Emily Martinelli and Melissa Miles; and first wife, W. Gracann Baker.
According to Bert’s wishes, cremation is planned without a public visitation. He will be interred in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery beside his beloved late wife, Mary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
