Herman E. Shultz

Herman E. Shultz, 92, of Dover, O., formerly of Bowerston, O., passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Union Hospital in Dover, after a brief illness.

Born September 2, 1917 in Conotton, O., he was a son of the late Beatty Elmer and Mary Pearl (Gatchell) Shultz.

A resident of the Bowerston area for most of his life, Herman was a graduate of Bowerston High School in the class of 1935. Upon returning home from his service in the U.S. Army in World War II, he began his forty-two year career with the Bowerston Shale Co. where he was a mechanic. In retirement, he and his wife, Erma, enjoyed living in Eustis, Fla. for twenty years.

In addition to being a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was also deeply committed to his community, having served as one of the original members of the Bowerston Volunteer Fire Department, as a former Councilman for the Village of Bowerston, and on the local draft board in the 1950’s. He was also a Past Commander of American Legion Post 581 and a member of the Orange Lodge F. & A. M. for more than fifty years.

On August 14, 1948, Herman married the former Erma I. Nagy who survives him. He is also survived by their three children, Harold Shultz and his wife, Jean Ann, of Great Falls, Mont., Mrs. Don (Deana M.) Coine of State College, Pa. and Mrs. William Jay (Vickie Jean) Chambers of Columbus, O.; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth L. Shultz and his wife, Freeda, of Canton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence M. Shultz, and three brothers, Doyle A., Brice A. and Raymond G. Shultz, in addition to his parents.

Services for Herman, officiated by Pastor Chester Rupert, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 17, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison with an hour of visitation prior to the service. Interment will follow in Bowerston’s Longview Cemetery with a military committal service conducted by the Scio American Legion.

Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Those wishing to honor Herman’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Alzheimer’s Association.
