Herbert Lee Hampton, known by all as Lee, passed away at the age of 94 in his Uhrichsville, Ohio home on Thursday, October 30, 2025. Born April 14, 1931 in Coshocton County, Ohio, he was a son of the late Boyce and Lydia Pearl (Watson) Hampton.
Lee grew up in West Lafayette, Ohio where he was a 1949 graduate of West Lafayette High School. He later furthered his education at DeVry University in Columbus, Ohio. Lee enjoyed a long career as a service engineer for Westinghouse Power Generation, often at the Conesville, Ohio plant. Possessed of a truly innovative mind, he later developed his own satellite dishes as a co-owner of Bell Hampton Receiving Dishes. He had also worked for DirecTV in retirement.
Throughout his adult life, Lee was active with the Free and Accepted Masons, having been a member of the West Lafayette F. & A. M. Lodge #602 for over 70 years. He had also been affiliated with the former Mystic Tie F. & A. M. Lodge #194, as well as the Port Washington F. & A. M. Lodge #202. Lee was also a member of the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree and was a Shriner.
Lee was an avid fisherman who looked forward to his annual trips to Red Lake, Ontario to fish with friends. He also loved watching NASCAR races and had attended many with his buddies over the years, including several Daytona 500s. Each summer, he loved spending time camping at Forest Hill Lake. He will be remembered by his friends from the various social clubs where he belonged, including the Dennison Eagles, Uhrichsville Eagles, New Philadelphia Elks, and Uhrichsville Moose where he was currently a member, and he had formerly been an auxiliary member of the Tuscarawas V.F.W. and member of the Dennison American Italian Club.
Lee will be deeply missed by his surviving family which includes his fiancée, Linda West; daughters, Carol Hampton and Cheryl (Warren) Peiter; adopted daughters, Cathy (Timothy) Hawkins, Sherry (Robert II) Marty, and Cindy Hervey; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Betty Ruth (Will) Hampton Apitz; several nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends, including Doug West and Ron Carman with whom he was especially close. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley I. (Carpenter) Hampton who died on April 10, 1997; his son, Steven Lee Hampton; and his brother, John W. Hampton.
A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, at the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison, Ohio, where Lee’s family will receive callers from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., prior to the service. Those wishing to honor Lee’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society, 1432 Tall Timber Rd. N.E., New Philadelphia, OH 44663 – as would befit his great love for his canine companions over the years.
