Helen S. Lanning

Helen Samantha Garner Lanning, 99, of La Grange, NC, formerly of Uhrichsville, peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2015. Born May 13, 1916 in Stillwater, she was the last surviving child of the late John Purl and Nora E. (Harper) Garner, having been preceded in death by her siblings, Ida Fern Ferguson, Pauline and Nellie Devore, and Clyde and Russell Garner.

On May 13, 1937, Helen married Walter Oakel Lanning with whom she enjoyed nearly 45 years of marriage until his passing on January 8, 1982. They were blessed with three children, Glen E. Lanning and his wife, Donna, of La Grange, and Wayne Leroy Lanning and Donna JoAnn Lanning Quinn who preceded Helen in death. Helen is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Molly Lanning of Kinston, NC; grandchildren, Wendy, Tonya, Raquel, Connie, Michelle, Tammy, Laura Beth, Ann, and Russell; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Helen leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and support for her family. Her quiet, behind-the-scenes nature, enthusiasm and charm will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She loved to travel, enjoyed senior citizen bus trips and, in earlier years, loved camping by the river in Ohio.

Services for Helen, officiated by the Rev. Charles Wesley Hill, will be held at 1pm on Friday, August 14, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside her beloved husband in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 1pm at the funeral home.
