Helen L. Palmer

Helen L. Palmer, 90, of Dover, formerly a longtime resident of Bowerston, passed away on Monday, January 7, 2013 at her daughter’s home while surrounded by her loving family. Born August 24, 1922 in Bowerston, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Ross and Edith Lois (Host) Hathaway.

Helen was a graduate of Bowerston High School in the class of 1940 and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Bowerston. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, she served as the Monroe Township Clerk for eleven years. She will be lovingly remembered for her beautiful quilting and all the baby quilts that she made and gave to her family and dear friends upon the birth of their children.

On April 4, 1944, Helen married George R. Palmer with whom she enjoyed nearly sixty years of marriage until his passing on May 4, 2003. They are survived by two daughters, Sandra (James) Willoughby and Lynne (Ernie) Weaver of Dover; Major Jama (Peter) Sealy of Washington, D.C. who grew up in their household and was loved like a daughter of their own; five grandchildren, Kimberly (Brian) Wright, James Willoughby, Peggy (Jack) Billow, Linda (Rod) Neff and Angie Davis; and seven great-grandchildren, Caitlin, MacKenzie, Cameron, Charlie, Anthony, Hannah and Mia. Helen is also survived by her sisters, Norma Page of Uhrichsville and Donna Quillen of Newcomerstown; brothers, Gene Hathaway of Holloway and Richard (Ann) Hathaway of Brunswick, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary E. Palmer, as well as her parents and husband.

In keeping with Helen’s wishes, she has been cremated without a public visitation or service. A private, family graveside service will be held in Tunnel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
