Hazel Jean "Jean" Torch

August 11, 1930 — January 28, 2014

Hazel Jean “Jean” Torch, 83, of Dennison, passed away while surrounded by her loving family at Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, after a lengthy illness. Born August 11, 1930 in Gnadenhutten, she was a daughter of the late Frederick John and Ida Grace (Bucher) Davis.

After growing up in Gnadenhutten and attending Gnadenhutten High School, Jean wed Guy Joseph Torch on September 25, 1948. From that day on, she devoted her life to her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker who resided in the Dennison area. She enjoyed nearly 50 years of marriage with Guy until his passing on February 1, 1998. They are survived by four children, Guy J. Torch, Jr. of Dennison, James F. and Steven L. Torch of West Lafayette, and Glenda J. (Leroy) Burke of Dennison; a daughter-in-law, Anna Lee Torch of Dennison; grandchildren, Kevin (Jen) Burke, Keith (Becca) Burke and Jessica (Ty) Young; stepgrandchildren, Topaz (Mike) Tolloti and Ken (Brandy) Roberts; and great-grandchildren, Kendra, Mason and Colton Young and Delaney Roberts. They were preceded in death by their son, Michael A. Torch.

Jean is also survived by three sisters, Geneva Keffer of Port Washington, Winifred Baker of Gnadenhutten, and Margaret Hall of Glasgow, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, son and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Nellie Stewart, Verna Bagaglio, Blanche Mathews, James Davis, David Davis, and Ruth Joan Davis.

Services for Jean, officiated by Pastor Brian Flood, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside her beloved husband in St. Mary’s Cemetery near Dennison. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
