Harry Albert Huff, 92, of Bowerston, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Sunnyslope Nursing Home in Bowerston following a period of declining health. He was born at the family farm on Willis Run Road near Bowerston on November 2, 1918, a son of the late Orva Clyde and Verna Mae (McPheters) Huff.
He married the former Luella Mae Bower on October 12, 1940, and they were inseparable for the next 64+ years before her sudden death on April 14, 2005. Harry never totally rebounded after losing the love of his life.
Survivors include his daughter, Margaret I. “Peggy” (Frank Davis) Huff of Bowerston; brother, Curtis Eugene Huff of Louisville, O.; many treasured nieces and nephews and their families; and a brother- and sister-in-law, Ernest and Lottie Bower of Cleveland.
In addition to his wife, Harry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald (an infant), Charles, and Edward (Mabel) Huff; sisters, Gladys (Raymond) Duram and Gertrude (Donald) Sagerman; sister-in-law, Jane Huff; brothers-in-law, Neil (Dolores) Bower, James (Leona) Bower, and Lloyd Bower; and father- and mother-in-law, Dennis and Maude Bower.
The family moved from the farm to the village of Tappan for a period of time where Harry and his father worked on the construction of Tappan Dam. He later worked for the railroad in Mingo Junction, O., leaving there to work for the Bowerston Shale Company. A truly loyal “company man,” Harry retired from Bowerston Shale after 53 years of service.
Harry and Luella lived their entire married life in Bowerston, except for a short period of time in Mingo Junction, and were both very active in their church and community. Harry served as village councilman for many years, was a charter member of the Bowerston Volunteer Fire Department, and held many offices in the church. He and Luella were also the motivating force behind the restoration of the chapel building at Longview Cemetery and elicited the help of many willing volunteers. They were both always ready to help when and where needed.
The only thing above Harry’s devotion to his job was his love and devotion to his family. To find him at any gathering, all you had to do was look for the circle of kids and you’d find “Uncle Harry” in the middle. He was a quite a teaser and jokester, and the little ones always gravitated to him. He loved it. There will always be a hole in our hearts that can’t be healed.
Services for Harry, officiated by Rev. Bob James, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home at Dennison. Interment will follow in Bowerston’s Longview Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Those wishing to honor Harry’s memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the charity of their choice.
