Gladys M. Carpenter Ohler, 72, of Steubenville, formerly of Tuscarawas, passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, W. Va. after a sudden illness. Born July 12, 1941 in Deersville, she was a daughter of the late William David and Heloise Hortense (Hauser) Ferguson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond E. Carpenter in November of 1969; her second husband, Earl Ohler in December of 1987; a grandson, Adam McAbier; a brother, William Hartzell Ferguson; and three sisters, Helen McDaniel, Irene Ferguson and Elizabeth Ferguson.
Although she had most recently resided in Steubenville, Gladys was previously a lifelong resident of Tuscarawas County and was a graduate of Uhrichsville H.S. in the class of 1959. She was an avid reader, a member of the Pike Run Trailblazers CB Club, and a member of the Handicapped Society. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who loved caring for her family and her home. She is survived by a son, Mikey Carpenter of Gnadenhutten; two daughters, Roxane (Ed) Gates of Steubenville with whom she had resided and K (Paul) McAbier of Gnadenhutten; four grandchildren, Brian McAbier of Gnadenhutten, Kelli (Levi) Naylor of Wintersville, Logun Gates of Steubenville and Marisa Carpenter of Bergholz; two brothers, Ralph Thomas Ferguson of Stillwater and Clarence Ferguson of Barnhill; a sister, Patty (Larry) Ohler of Barnhill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services for Gladys, officiated by Rev. Mark Unrue, will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. She will be interred at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover. Family and friends are invited to call the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
