Garfield Benjamin Stewart, 85, of Uhrichsville, O., died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison, O., after a lengthy illness. Born December 10, 1925 in Newcomerstown, O., he was a son of the late Ernest Russell and Mellie Elizabeth (Renner) Stewart.
A lifelong resident of Tuscarawas County, Garfield was a longtime employee of Harry Humphrey’s Ford in New Philadelphia where he had been a mechanic. He loved fishing, enjoyed hunting in his younger years, and was a member of the Dennison Eagles.
On November 18, 1949, he married the former Julienne I. “Judy” Whalen with whom he enjoyed nearly sixty years of marriage until her passing on March 9, 2007. They are survived by a daughter, Linda Heavilin of Uhrichsville. Garfield is also survived by three brothers, Jim Stewart and his wife, Shirley, of Gnadenhutten, Dean Stewart and his wife, Linda, of Atwood, and Dale Stewart and his wife, Cathy, of Uhrichsville; four sisters, Mary Devore and Mrs. Richard (Audrey) Clum of Uhrichsville, Mrs. Ed (Betty) Littleton of Dover, and Margie Burton of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Fred, and Jack Stewart, and a sister, Ethel.
In keeping with his wishes, Garfield has been cremated without a public visitation. A graveside service, officiated by Rev. Harry Milligan, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6, in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover, O. where he will be interred beside his beloved wife.
