G. David O'Hara

October 29, 1935 — May 11, 2024

George David “Dave” O’Hara, 88, of Dennison, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024, after a slow decline in health following a stroke. Born October 29, 1935 in Coshocton, he was the last surviving child of the late Harold Dean O’Hara and Margaret Kay (Johnson) O’Hara-Povick, having been preceded in death by his brother, Keith O’Hara, and sister, Diane Riggs.

After spending his early childhood in Coshocton, Dave moved with his family to Dennison on the day that World War II ended and spent the rest of his life as a Dennison resident. He was a 1954 graduate of Dennison High School, had formerly been a member of Grant Street United Methodist Church and Roxford United Methodist Church, and had most recently been a member of Park Christian Church in Dennison.

Dave was employed by Claymont Schools in a variety of capacities – including as a bus driver, attendance officer, supervisor of buildings and grounds, and transportation director – until his retirement in 2004. He will be most remembered by many for his years of coaching at Claymont, having been active from 1957 to 2004. Through his long coaching career, he had been the head coach of the basketball team, as well as the assistant football coach. Dave also served Claymont Schools on their Board of Education in the late 60’s and early 70’s, including as a past president of the board. He enjoyed golfing, painting homes, and gardening when he could find the time in his busy schedule. Dave continued to be a faithful supporter of all Claymont sporting events and was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns.

On October 3, 1953, Dave married the former Charlene Louise Cherrington with whom he was blessed to spend 67 years of loving marriage until her passing on October 26, 2020. They are survived by three sons, John (Lisa) O’Hara, Monty (Mary) O’Hara, and Matthew (Vikki) O’Hara; a daughter, Becky (Marc) Vermillion; grandchildren, Jennifer (Brent) Jones, Jessica Murphy, Keith O’Hara, Quinn (Jenna) O’Hara, Derek (Brittney) O’Hara, Hayley (David) DiGenova, Raquel (Scotty) Jones, Marcus Vermillion, and Braylon Vermillion; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, wife, and siblings, Dave was preceded in death by a son, Wesley David O’Hara.

Pastor Scot Caley will officiate a 1:00 p.m. funeral on Thursday, May 16, at the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow beside his beloved wife in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. His family will receive callers from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, prior to the service. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the Claymont Booster Club, P. O. Box 604, Uhrichsville, OH  44683.
