Fred E. Carpenter

Fred E. Carpenter, 83, of Dennison, O., passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009 at Twin City Hospital in Dennison, following a period of declining health.

Born September 13, 1925 in Dennison, he was a son of the late James M. and Helen M. (Rector) Carpenter.

Fred was a veteran of World War II, having served his country in the U.S. Army. Other than his time in the service, he was a lifelong resident of the Twin City area. He retired from Superior Clay and had also worked for Claymont Sunoco.

He attended Roxford United Methodist Church for a number of years and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed doing puzzles and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers and Indians.

Fred’s surviving family includes his wife, Patricia L. Hykes-Jones-Carpenter to whom he was married on January 7, 1991; two sons, Mike Carpenter and his wife, Abbie, and Robert Carpenter and his wife, Becky, all of Dennison; a daughter, Nancy VanDine and her husband, Jim, of Uhrichsville; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; six step children, Jan Beitzel, Sharon Harmon, Tim Jones, Brenda Hughes, Tom Jones and Mary Jane Mendoza; nineteen step grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren.

He is also survived by two brothers, Walter Carpenter of Uhrichsville and Donald Carpenter and his wife, Nancy, of Dover; two sisters, Evelyn Martin of Dover and Jean Carpenter of Uhrichsville; a sister-in-law, Freda Garbrandt of Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah M. (Hines) Carpenter; a daughter, Shirley Spano; and a sister, June M. Carpenter.

A memorial service and celebration of his life, officiated by Pastor Scot Caley, will be held on Friday, June 19, at 11:00 a.m. in Park Christian Church at Dennison. Interment will follow with a military committal service in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Those wishing to honor his memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the charity of their choice.
