Evelyn L. "Pickle" Hunter, age 90, a lifelong resident of Dennison died Friday, April 09, 2010, in her home surrounded by her family. Throughout her declining health, it was her desire to remain in her home. This request was made possible through the attentive care of her granddaughter, “Mandy”.
A daughter of the late John and Martha (Tanzie) Collins, Pickle, as she has been known by since childhood, was born at Dennison on January 14, 1920, and was a 1937 graduate of the former Dennison High School.
On October 29, 1938, Pickle married Carl W. Hunter and together the couple reared five children.
For many years Pickle served as a cook for Dennison High School prior to becoming a fulltime homemaker. After raising her family, Pickle would return to the workforce where for a period of time she would work at the former Hall Glove Factory at Uhrichsville.
As a couple, the Hunters were avid sports fans. For many years, Pickle enjoyed traveling with Carl as he officiated basketball games throughout the state. Years later, she could be found at his side cheering on the Claymont High School boy’s basketball team as he kept team tabulations.
Additionally, Pickle was a devoted fan of the Cleveland sports teams, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and enjoyed following professional golf, especially if Tiger Woods was playing. In her early years, she enjoyed league bowling and won numerous trophies for her efforts.
Many people were privileged to have received one of Pickle’s beautiful pieces of crocheting, a hobby that she enjoyed for many years until her eyesight would no longer allow her to do so.
Pickle was a life long member of Park Christian Church, having been actively involved in activities and programs for many years and was also a longtime member of the “Joy” Sunday school class. She loved her Church and God and had an immeasurable faith in the Lord and his works as our Savior.
Pickle leaves behind her five children, Larry (Darlene) Hunter of Alliance, Linda (Dick) Cox of Dennison, JoAnn (Les) Carter of Kent, Ronnie (Donna) Hunter of Parksburg, Pennsylvania, and Bonnie (Glenn "Bub") Smith of Uhrichsville; a sister-in-law, Alberdine Collins of Dennison and a brother-in-law, Lee Hunter of Florida.
Eleven grandchildren, Anita (Brad) Dickerhoof, Brenda (Scott) Grewe, Kirk (Becky) Hunter, Stephen (Kimberly) Cox, Jeffrey (Dawn) Cox, Amanda (Nathan) Douglas, LaRissa (companion, Raylin Neloms) Carter, Anita (fiancé, James Jordan) Carter, Christina (Joshua) Yackey, Ana Hunter and Justin (fiancée, Michelle Sickinger) Smith; Sixteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Pickle was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Joe Collins and a sister, Ethel Andexler.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 12, 2010, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM in Park Christian Church at Dennison. Pastors Scot Caley and David Bryan will lead a service celebrating Pickle’s life on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 1:00 PM in the church’s Worship Center.
